Earlier today, Sony COO Phil Molyneux officially said that the upcoming Play Station 4 would support downloadable 4k video. This comes in contrast to the previously known fact that the console will not play 4k games, but rather output a more traditional 1080p resolution.
In order to download 4k res movies, consumers will need to be able to download “100 gigabytes and plus” depending on length and compression. Considering most standard cable subscriptions cap users at 200-250GB, and download speeds are around 12Gb, the logistics of Sony’s new content delivery system still have some major challenges. Sony has not ruled out the possibility of physical distribution for 4k content.
